Spring Cleaning: Mental Health Edition

Spring has sprung and here is your friendly reminder that it’s never too late to re-evaluate what’s working and what isn’t when it comes to your mental health. Here are 5 questions to ask yourself to get the thoughts flowing:

  1. On a scale of 1-10, how satisfied are you with how you feel? Unless you’re a 10 out of 10 (good for you if you’re already there), ask yourself what is ONE thing you can do to bump up that score. This should give you an idea of something you can do to take care of yourself that you’ve stopped because life can get busy.

  2. If you weren’t worried about the reactions of others, what would you be doing AND what would you NOT be doing? Think about those plans that you feel obligated to attend but you don’t really feel like going. What would you like to be doing instead? And yes, bills have to be paid and having an income is important. Big changes aren't necessary here, it can be as small as you need it to be.

  3. What do you worry most about…and can you change it? Typically the things we worry most about are people and situations that we cannot change. Objectively we know we cannot do much yet here we are thinking about it. It’s more common than you’d think and this time around, acknowledge the frustration of not being able to control the uncontrollables and refocus on what you CAN control (HINT: It’s going to be your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors).

  4. What are ways in which you feel supported? (Gold star next to this one!). There is a lot to this question but at the heart of it, it’s asking you to think about your support system as well as being able to identify what you need in certain situations. It’s hard to communicate what you need if you don’t know what it is. When you know and those supports ask, you may have a better idea how to respond.

  5. When do you feel the most relaxed? Who are you with, what are you doing, and how do you feel? Mental health can have a negative connotation to it but within mental health, we want to keep the good stuff that’s working and you may already be doing it. And if you are, great! Give yourself the pat on the back!

Happy Spring Cleaning! But don't worry if you're feeling stuck, this is why therapy is useful as it can allow you to connect to what YOU actually think and feel. Or maybe you want to explore these questions more, that's great too! To learn more, contact Modern Therapy CB to schedule!
